 Self Consciousness

First thing I do is use Mind's Body to get a sense of how much Psynesis energy she has, despite the fact that I'm not the one fighting, but...

The amount of energy she has is fluctuating greatly. It's rising and falling, in the rhythm of a heartbeat. At its highest, it surpasses even the amount of energy that Messa has!

Eventually, the first move is made by Jehan, who starts with a meaty physical right hook. She's able to block the attack easily, in fact, so easy it's a bit strange. I'm not surprised that she didn't take any damage, but when he threw the attack, he was the one who was pushed back, not her.

She quickly goes on the offensive, trying to use a mix of physical and mental overhead attacks. Again, he seems to slide across the ground way more than what should be normal.

"Do you see that?"

"See what?"

"Look at the ground as he's getting pushed back."

Ah, I see it! When he gets pushed back, he obviously kicks up dust along the way, but other random lines of dust are being kicked up as if something invisible was slithering across the ground!

"She's pretty smart for using attacks that mostly come from above, since that's an easy way to guarantee that he doesn't look at the ground."

"There's no way he doesn't notice that he's sliding around unusually though, right?"

"True. That must mean that the extra dust has some other use."

"It goes without saying that it's an enchanter ability, since it directly affects the ground."

Messa seems like he's about to say something, but he gets cut off by Jehan getting slammed into the door! Aroha's relentless pressure on Jehan makes me anxious that the door is going bust down!

I'm about to go over to try and block the door but before I end up getting into position, Jehan has already been grabbed and thrown in the other direction! I can't tell if she's concerned with the door falling down, or if she thought it would be easier to grab the enemy instead of continuing her pressure. I feel like she'd be giving up a positional advantage though...

"Hey, you should keep using Mind's Body, since you're not in danger. It makes it much easier to analyze battles."

"Nah, I'm fine."

"You're fine?"

"Well, if I'm used to looking at combat with Body's Mind, then when I'm forced in a position where I can't use it for some reason, then I'll be a lot worse, right?"

""... I suppose. The point that I was getting at when I said you should use Mind's Body was that as the battle has been going on, Jehan has been slowly, maybe even subconsciously moving his defences to his upper body, since she's refusing to do sweeping attacks."

He's right! Due to this, it's becoming harder and harder for her to get a clean hit on Jehan. Even though she's clearly shown to be more skillful so far, she's almost literally fighting with a hand behind her back!

"I understand her trying to hide her ability, but is it really worth it to limit your offensive pressure by that much?"

"It's subjective. Plus, we're not sure what her ability does yet."

Finally, she gets another clean hit on Jehan, after about 10 seconds of constant pressure. She gets him by feinting a physical right hook, only for him to try and punish her, since if she'd thrown the attack, then he'd be out of her range. The barrage of mental attacks she unleashed on him felt more like traditional boxing than... whatever anime bullshit Messa and Lina were doing. Not doing... well, anything but punching really adds to that feeling.

But what was strange about it was how the combination of attacks ended. At the end, he slid backwards a significant amount, enough to make him far enough away to reset any active pressure that Aroha had on him. Of course, this was due to her ability, but what was actually unexpected was that as he was sliding away, Aroha made herself drop to the ground and, as if she was being pushed by an invisible force, she slide directly towards Jehan, landing a nasty physical kick on his ankle! Somehow, Jehan manages to barely keep himself upright.

"I'm surprised you managed to keep yourself upright."

That's what I'm saying!

"Not quite as surprised as I am that you haven't revealed your ability yet. My guess is that there's a condition that hasn't been activated yet that you need to use the ability."

"That's where you're wrong, Aroha. The condition needed for me to activate my ability... Has already been activated! "

Suddenly, red paper gets shot from the branches of the tree just above Aroha, and instantly binds her at her exact spot!

"As this fight was playing out, you continuously removed my options for movement, between using your ability to alter the ground, to pushing me against the door, to even grabbing and throwing me around."

"Is there a rest stop between now and the fucking point?" Wait, did she just...?

"The point is that due to your actions throughout the battle, you have chosen the Red Paper. Now I can release all of my pent up anger by strangling your right leg! This attack will be ten times as powerful as the one you unleashed on my leg! Now say goodbye!"

"Wait, the red paper strangles my leg? So if I activated another condition, you'd bring in blue paper to slice my leg up instead?"

"Ah, it seems you're familiar with the Aka Mato myth. It's nice to know that I'm fighting someone with a sense of culture. Now, take my karmic paper!"

Suddenly, the red paper starts spinning tightly around right leg and ankle, before swiftly and violently pulling at her leg, trying to snap it in half!

Then... nothing happens.

"What?!"

"So, a few things I want to say to you." she says, after taking a hefty sigh.

First, in the Aka Manto myth, you forgot the n sound, it's the red paper that slices you up, while the blue paper strangles you.

"Oh... that's... right."

The red paper then slowly fades into a blue color. But...

"Why is that happening?"

"That's right!" Messa yells, extremely excited at the events unfolding.

"Most abilities come from something that you're passionate about, but much of the effects, appearance, and even sometimes strength of the abilities are based off of your subjective beliefs. This is called the placebo effect."

"Is there a rest stop between now and the fucking point?"

"First, don't take people's one liners, that someone just said, it makes you uncreative."

"We both took it from the same youtube video! I know it!"

"Regardless, something interesting about the placebo effect is that if you're able to prove someone wrong in their subjective beliefs, their ability to change to match their new beliefs! Sometimes this can even lead into a second awakening, if you change one of their fundamental beliefs that make the ability work as a whole. What's great about this, is that if you do this against an opponent, you significantly reduce the ability's effectiveness on you!"

"Is that why she didn't take any damage?"

"No, that must have been her ability, since she didn't correct him until after he tried to attack."

"Also, you really shouldn't give away what your ability is if you don't have to. It really hinders your ability for surprise attacks."

Just after she says that, dust quickly starts to coalesce towards Jehan's feet! He's quickly able to defend his legs and feet as much as he can with physical defenses!

"I knew it!" he yells.

"I knew your ability somehow altered the ground!"

Then, all the dust is pushed away, creating a ring like shape of dust around Jehan's feet, just bef-

Holy shit his head came clean off!
