 In the Thick of It

There was about a 10 minute threshold where The Society's Vanguard would be waiting by the back entrance of the hotel to sneak in. Supposedly it was because they didn't want to be there when the guard woke up, and that was how long they estimated they would be knocked out. But Messa and I agreed that they would just kill the guard and that 10 minutes was just the longest they'd be willing to wait.

By the time we get to Dirpending, we finally manage to agree on a plan to attract and divert the attention of the two guards watching the front, because apparently when I first went to the hotel, one of them was probably taking a bathroom break or something.

As we approach the hotel, Messa says something to me.

"I have an idea."

"What is it?"

"Follow my lead."

What do you mean, "follow my lead?" I swear if you're about to...

"We've come to turn ourselves in!"

I regret everything. The two guards start to approach us.

"Alright, I'll deal with the large gas mask guy, while you deal with the blindfolded dude."

"Why are you like this?"

Messa just chuckles, before side-stepping away from me.

As the big guy chases after Messa, the blind man runs towards me, and I flex my Psynesis energy in response. That is the way to communicate that you want a fight, right? Although I guess that would be like if flexing your muscles in public got you punched.

"Sorry, I'm going to have to detain you," he says as he's taking a battle pose.

I guess it works then! Although that's probably due to the context...

The ground around us, it's turned pitch black! The moment I realise that, walls of the same color quickly surround both of us, leaving us both in darkness!

An interesting ability, to be sure. But I'm not sure what's entirely unique about i-

An attack, right side!

I duck in response, feeling the wind from the attack fly right over my head! I quickly activate Body's Mind to conceal my presence and create distance between us, but I end up bumping into something! I can hear it dragging across the floor, and if I can hear that, then there's no doubt about if the blind guy can hear it!

I try to move unpredictably, trying to crouch and skip around from side to side. To be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing! Luckily for me, I can feel a bit of wind whoosh right past me, as he whiffs yet another attack!

I crouch further down to the ground, while I'm waiting for him to walk away...

But... for some reason, I can't hear him at all. Has he not moved yet? Either way, I need some sort of way for me to visualize my position in my head. But if I want to do that, I need to figure out where one of the corners are. I back up, moving at a snail's pace in an attempt to find the edge of this black box. I just hope that he doesn't start swinging wildly to try and hit me.

Now that I'm slowing down and processing the situation I'm in, I only just now realize how much of a disadvantage I'm at. Since I'm using Body's Mind right now to conceal my presence, I obviously can't use Mind's Body as an attempt to find the enemy. Which is a problem, because I need to use Mind's Body in order to have any idea where the next attack is coming from, not to mention the fact that I can't use any of my other Psynesis abilities while I'm using Body's Mind. It was a mistake using Body's Mind in the first place! What I need to do is bait out an attack from the enemy, and dodge the attack while I'm readjusting to use Mind's Body instead of Body's Mind.

I'm interrupted by a peculiar sound coming from behind me. It was a metalic, electronic sound. If I didn't feel the back of my shirt rubbing up against the wall behind me, I would have no idea what that sound was.

I quickly duck, successfully predicting the enemy's next attack, as I feel that wind of relief coming from his missed punch again.

I need to put distance between me and him while I'm adjusting to Mind's Body! I swerve to the left in an attempt to outmaneuver him, but it's less than a foot of stumbling until I hit the OTHER wall of the black box! It feels like slamming up against a TV screen.

But, I need to keep moving! How is he going to attack me next? I ducked under his last two attacks, so his next attack will probably try to hit me lower! I run across the wall, trying to move to the left of him, and the moment I get my Psynesis abilities back, I immediately focus some physical energy into my legs to jump forward and away from the wall to my left, completely dodging whatever attack he likely just threw at me!

As I'm still rising through the air, I feel my left leg bump onto something slightly, likely something somewhat tall, if I still bumped into it while soaring about 3-4ft in the air. I consider activating Mind's Body, but jumping long distances in complete darkness is a little disorienting as is, and activating Mind's Body would prevent me from perceiving the physical world completely, which is something that I still desperately need.

I land on the ground, with my right leg slamming up against something hard. It kinda hurt, but not that much.

I quickly turn directly around and try to block any frontal physical attacks that he might throw at me. Unfortunately, I blocked the right kind of attack, but not in the right place, as he slams down on my head with one of his fists, knocking me on my ass, and pushing me up against another wall.

I try to grip the hard surface that I just slammed my leg against as I was landing, in an attempt to lift myself up, but when I push down on it, it's... soft? Is this a bed? Am I in a bedroom? Whatever, no time to think about that.

I finally activate Mind's Body, only to see that the enemy has backed up a bit, readying their next attack. Since it's likely that I would immediately try to cover my head after I've been hit there, it makes sense for him to attack a lower part of my body. But while I have Mind's Body active, I don't feel pain there at all!

I jump less than a foot into the air, dodging the enemy's sweep attack. I then focus physical energy into one of my feet and....

STOMP!

His ankle twitches quite a bit when I end up hitting him! It's quite disturbing, actually. He's able to quickly wiggle away just after using Body's Mind to conceal his presence.

My first instinct was to immediately try and punch or stomp at the ground in an attempt to press the advantage, but I barely manage to stop myself. I need to calm down. I have now felt three out of the four walls, and I got a pretty good visual on the proportions of the walls.

The room looks something like this so far, with green being where I am.

I don't have nearly as good hearing as the blind guy, obviously. I need some other way to find this guy without him exposing himself to my Mind's Body, to try and mirror the effect his hearing has on the battle.

...I think I know exactly what to do.

I start to slowly move forward, at the same snail's pace as when I was back up towards the wall earlier. I keep my Mind's Body on so I know exactly when the enemy might reveal themselves.

...Okay, now that I'm a little bit farther away from the walls, I start spawning tons of Simplification Soap all around where I'm standing!

Usually, I spawn the Simplification Soap specifically for using the simplification. But, when I spawn the soap, I don't need to actually use that ability, and since the soap doesn't go away until I activate the simplification ability, it'll just spread across the floor. Since the Soap is a Psynesis technique, I can sense it easily! If I can sense it's position easily, that means I can also tell if someone steps into the soap! Sure, the soap does make a little bit of sound when it spawns, but there's no way for him to tell how much soap is on the ground right now without activating Mind's Body!

(Blue is the Simplification Soap)

From how much of the ground has been covered, and my physical defenses slightly up, there's no way he'll be able to attack me without revealing himself! He can't jump over the soap, which is theoretically possible if he knew the exact placement of the soap, or he used physical enhancements to jump higher, both of which he can't without revealing himself. He can't just walk up to me, since I'd be able to sense the displacement in the soap as he walks through it, thus revealing his location. Finally, he can't throw anything at me, since he doesn't know my exact position without using Mind's Body either!

Now this is checkmate.
