Chapter 8: In the Thick of it

Since I can sense if my soap is displaced by an object, I know if someone tries to walk through it, or if something is already there to prevent my soap from spreading to that area. That's how I know that thing I barely hit my foot on as I was jumping is probably a dresser.

About ten seconds have passed since I used Simplification Soap to cover the ground. Since I know the blind man hasn't activated Mind's Body yet, I know for sure that he doesn't know how much of the ground is covered in soap. It's likely that he's trying to put as much distance between himself and my soap. He's probably somewhere to the left of me, since there's a lot of room for him to move around in. As tempting as it is to go after him, I know that staying in this position will probably be more worthwhile.

What is this room anyway? Of course, it's a room generated by his ability, but what is it supposed to be? It has a bed, so you'd think it's a bedroom, but it's far too big to be one. Maybe what appears in the room is random, which would explain why it's layout doesn't make any sense. The ability would be more fair that way as well, while still putting the blind man's unique skills to use. If I've learned anything about Psynesis so far, it's that it likely uses the user's inner sense of fairness as a scale of how much energy the ability would take. If an ability seems more unfair towards the enemy, it will likely cost more.

Wait! I just felt something from... the back corner?!

I turn around as fast as I can, trying to block his physical overhead attack! But even when you block the right type of attack, sometimes the overwhelming amount of power will cause you to stagger back, even if you block the attack correctly. At least, I think I blocked the attack correctly. But no time to think about that, I can tell he landed on his feet from the soap that I've laid out, so I have to be ready for his next set of attacks!

Right side, physical, gut punch, mental, sweeps I can just dodge by jumping a little bit, and I can easily tell if one's coming because of how much soap he has to move around even before he kicks. Despite that, it takes so much effort to even block the enemy's attacks correctly. From what I can tell, he's a mental preferred type, and given his ability, it's likely that he's a Conjurer.

I back up to try and dodge his attacks instead of focusing heavily on blocking. But as I'm backing up, I quickly hit... a wall? But I've hardly stepped out of my soap area!

Red is the enemy, and since I can pinpoint his exact location, the area is much smaller, unlike the green area for myself, because I can't tell exactly where I'm standing.

As I'm backing up against the wall, I quickly hit some kind of door frame. I quickly try and feel out for some type of doorknob, but to no avail.

He's going to start to move off of my soap soon! I need to make sure he doesn't do that! I try to run over to the thing I first bumped into upon the ability being activated, frantically trying to wave my hands around where it might be.

Aha! Just as I thought, I originally bumped into a chair! I quickly pick it up, and upon the enemy sensing that I've done so, they immediately start to move in an unpredictable fashion. From the enemy's perspective, it just seems like I've just put soap, or some other slippery substance across the ground to hinder him from dodging, but that's not the case! While I cannot simplify a human to the point where their skin may start to fuse with something else, I can use the simplification ability on someone's clothes!

I activate the soap on the ground, thus simplifying the bottom of the enemy's shoes! The small pocket of air between the shoe and the ground is seen as a little detail to be removed, causing the enemy's shoes to fuse with the ground! But... I feel like I could also "simplify" the ground by trying to remove its ability. But... What ability does the ground have? Now's not the time to think about that! I immediately capitalize on the enemy's completely hindered movement by throwing the chair at them, and start to rush towards him with mental attacks right after!

Even though he's rooted to the ground with my ability, it won't take much effort for him to physically enhance his legs and jump with enough force that he'll simply jump out of his shoes, breaking them in the process, of course. But to do that, he'll have to physically enhance his legs, which he can't do if he has his mental defenses up.

He's able to handle the chair relatively easily, but I'm able to quickly get a clean hit to his gut with a relatively powerful mentally charged punch! His immediate response is to raise his mental defenses, naturally. That decision is helped by the fact that I didn't let up with my mental attacks. But, even with his feet bound to the ground, it's hard to get a clean hit off on him while also making sure he doesn't have enough time to counterattack. Even taking the time to shift my body so that I can get some good punches on his leg is probably too long for me to go unpunished. Whether it's an attack from the left, right, center, or above, if I stick to using my slow mental attacks, I'm not gonna make any progress!

I quickly feint a swing with my right arm, before swapping to physical enhancements and getting another clean hit on the enemy with my left, hitting him just above the heart!

He's able to quickly adjust, despite the pain, and he breaks out of his shoe-related binding, and moves to my left, towards the dresser. I swing with my left arm, trying to punch him in the head, but he ducks and dodges to the right! He puts himself in Body's Mind, concealing his presence and leaving my arm to smash the glass... somethings that were on the dresser.

...Actually, I just had a thought. How did he get into the back corner when I had my soap all across the floor? I wasn't thinking about it at the time because I was too busy blocking his attacks. He obviously couldn't have walked through the soap, and he couldn't have jumped onto the bed without making noise even I could hear. It's also extremely unlikely that he could have silently climbed across the top of the dresser, due to all the glass things that were on there. If he wanted to climb on the dresser anyway, it would be because he wanted to avoid the floor entirely, not because he wanted to move into some arbitrary corner that he would have no way of knowing would be safe!

Nothing about that makes any sense... There must be more to this ability, right? Well, as I accidentally proved to myself, I can simplify enemy abilities, thus removing their properties. So I decided to test my theory, by backing up to the door I recently found, and activating my ability on it! When I try and simplify this door, it's like I'm draining its special properties from it! Although the draining needs a constant supply of soap that I have to generate.

Actually, if this is just a normal screen now that I've depowered it, can I just...?

I take a step back, physically enhance my entire body, and slam right through the door!

When I stumble to the other side, I'm quickly met by a burning light! Rather than the other room being pitch black, it's quite easy to see what's happening in this room, although my eyes are still readjusting!

By the time my eyes readjust, I look across the room to see the enemy, shocked to see that I had broken through! I can mostly tell because, well, the blind guy... isn't wearing a blindfold anymore!
